Gary Shares His Putting Philosophy

The two most important things about putting are distance and direction.

The first thing I ask a player is, “how do you see yourself as a putter?” From there, I ask them the areas they’d like to improve their putting.

Is it your feel for distance? Your feel around the greens? Are you missing shorts putts or long putts?

To me, when players start missing short putts, I know it’s more about technique — face and path. If a player is struggling with long putts, they’re probably not striking the ball solidly.
