GGGA students make big move at AJGA at Mission Inn

GGGA students Alejandro Lopez and Camilo Mexsen made up a huge amount of ground on the leaderboard Sunday at the AJGA Junior All-Star at Mission Inn.

Mexsen and Lopez combined to go 8 under par Sunday as Mexsen fired a 5-under 67 while Lopez turned in a 3-under 69 on the El Campeon Course at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey in the Hills, Fla.

Mexsen got off to a tough start in round one with a 77 but jumped from T25 to a tie for second with Lopez with his low second round. Lopez meanwhile moved from outside the top five, going from a T9 to two back of the lead in second with Mexsen.

The final round will get underway Monday where Mexsen and Lopez will square off against Carl Yuan, who carded consecutive 71s to open a two-shot lead in the final pairing.

Mexsen and Lopez tallied 11 birdies Sunday. Both also hail from Mexico and are students in the Full-Time Junior Program at the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy.

Meanwhile, fellow GGGA student Luis Garza also made a big jump at the AJGA Puerto Rico Junior Open.

Garza, also of Mexico, moved from T17 to T2 after a a 4-under 68 Sunday in the second round at Trump International Golf Club and is six back of 36-hole leader Jorge Garcia.
