Team GGGA pro Cazaubón wins PGA Tour Latinoamérica qualifier

Team GGGA pro Rodolfo Cazaubón’s pro career has begun quite nicely.

Saturday, Cazaubón took medalist honors at the PGA Tour Latinoamérica qualifier in Peru, earning full exempt status for the 2014 season. After turning pro just four months ago, Cazaubón also took top honors at Ebreichsdorf Golf Club at European Tour Q School First Stage Section A.

Among 48 players from 16 countries who earned status for the 2014 season of NEC Series-PGA TOUR Latinoamérica, Cazaubón, of Mexico, earned the top spot with a final round 68 that included birdies on five of the first six holes.

Cazaubón, who attended the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy prior to playing college golf at the University of North Texas and still works with the GGGA team on the development of his game, finished the week at 8-under par 280 to win by two.

The way Cazaubón began the week, his finish was somewhat unlikely.

Cazaubón started with a triple-bogey on No. 10 in round one and was at 6-over par through only five holes.

“I had been through something like that in the past, maybe not as bad as it got here, but thank God I was able to make a comeback,” Cazaubon said after the round. “(The key) was staying very patient and calm. I kept giving the best I had because I knew there were a lot of holes left to play.”

The 2014 season of NEC Series-PGA TOUR Latinoamérica will consist of 16 events in 10 countries across Latin America. The season, to be played in two swings, will begin on Feb. 17 with the Colombian Open in Bucaramanga, Colombia. The season will be a race for players looking to finish the year among Los Cinco – the Order of Merit’s Top 5 – who will earn playing status on the Web.com Tour in 2015. By competing on NEC Series-PGA TOUR Latinoamérica, players also have the opportunity to earn status on PGA TOUR Canada and exemptions into the second and final stages of the Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament.

Another field of 132 players will battle for the same playing privileges next week at the Sun N’ Lake Golf Club in Sebring, Fla. Jan. 21-24.
