Gilchrist Student Shanshan Feng Takes 2nd at Ricoh Women’s British Open

A close battle was played this weekend at the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Liverpool, as several players fiercely battled for victory at the closing of the final round.

Team GGGA pro Shanshan Feng, a student of Gary Gilchrist’s, and top ten LPGA player, held a three-way share of the lead with Mo Martin and Inbee Park at 1 under, but her position was sealed as Mo Martin overtook the lead with her eagle on the 72nd hole.

Feng had several opportunities to secure her spot at the top of the leaderboard, missing all three of her birdie putts on the back nine’s three par 5s.

“In the past, she has really battled to perform in the British Open, but she showed so much maturity as she entered this tournament with an open mind, where she played like a champion,” noted her coach Gary Gilchrist in regards to Feng’s chances at the Women’s British Open. “I think this course was really tough. If miss a fairway you land on thick rough, but she is such a good driver and iron player that she wasn’t forced to play too many of those shots this week.”

In the end, it was Martin’s fabulous finish that secured the victory, topping elite company as Feng T2 with previous major champion Suzann Pettersen with three-time major champion Inbee Park in fourth.
