The Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy brought home one win and four top finishes at the FCWT Junior Golf Tournament at Falcon’s Fire Golf Club on November 19 & 20, 2016. Falcon’s Fire Golf Club is recognized both regionally and nationally as one of the finest public golf courses in Orlando. Stretching over 7,000 yards from the back tees and providing golfers four sets of tees to choose from, Falcon’s Fire offers a challenging yet playable course for a relaxing round with friends or a competitive tournament.
Students experienced two very different days of weather on the course. Saturday was warm and sunny where Sunday brought in unusually chilly temperatures. “This was a really successful tournament. Every student played well above average.” says Coach Matt Fields. “This is a course we have visited in the past so a lot of the students were familiar with it. Even with our new students. We knew how to prepare before we even arrived. We knew what holes the students needed to focus on.”
GGGA Coaches are on the field with the students as they play through the tournament. During the day of the tournament students go in with a plan in place. The preparation that goes into tournaments is what allows students to walk on the course feeling very comfortable, and therefore confident.
Bennett Cotten, 16 years old from Winnetka, Illinois, won first place in the Boys Division age 15-19 in addition to being final day low round winner.
“The coaches job during the tournament is to support and observe. We watch for how they play on the course compared to during in practice. We take notes and watch for the decisions students are making.” says Coach Matt Fields. After an active rest day, coaches follow up with students after each tournament to review their individual approaches. The start of the season focuses on analysis and building a foundation for the students. This preparation is the foundation of the full time junior golf program. essential to the student’s growth and the positive effects are seen as each tournament goes by and GGGA students continue to fill the leaderboard just like we saw at the 2016 FCWT Falcon’s Fire Junior Golf Tournament.
