GGGA student Johan Werge was named Golfweek’s Player of the Week following his win at the Optimist International Tournament of Champions Sunday.
Werge, a student in the Full-Time Junior Program at the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy, was the runner-up last weekend at the Golfweek Junior Invitational, and continued his stellar play to at ChampionsGate.
The Mexico native finished at 3-under-par 141 for a three-shot win in the boys 16-18 division.
A hole-in-one on No. 17 in the first round helped him to a 2-under 70. He then followed with a 1-under 71 with three birdies on the International Golf Course at ChampionsGate.
Werge’s win at the Optimist International Tournament of Champions marks the third consecutive year a student from the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy had come out on top.
Werge is also the fourth GGGA student in the last two years to have been named Golfweek’s Player of the Week. Last year, seniors Peter Valasek, Nicholas Reach and Maia Schechter all received the honor — all of whom went on to play D-1 college golf.
Valasek is a freshman at Coastal Carolina University, Reach is a freshman at the University of Georgia and Schechter is a freshman at the University of North Carolina.
