GGGA student Camilo Mexsen posts 11 under, wins IMG Eagle Creek

GGGA student Camilo Mexsen played Eagle Creek Golf Club to near perfection for two days.

Mexsen made just one bogey through two rounds while setting an IMG Junior Golf Tour scoring record as he finished the event at Eagle Creek Golf Club at a staggering 11-under 135.

Mexsen, 15, and a 2016 graduate, is a student in the Full-Time Junior Program at the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy and a sophomore at Montverde Academy, GGGA’s academic partner, and has not yet committed to a college or university to play college golf.

Last year, Mexsen blew away the field at Eagle Creek too when he finished at 7-under 139 for a four shot win.

On the front nine, Mexsen got off to a hot start both days making the turn at 4-under 32 en route to carding a 7-under 66 and a 4-under 69 while birdieing 10 of 18 holes through two days. His only blemish came at the long par 3 11th where he posted his lone bogey Sunday.

Eagle Creek suited more than just Mexsen’s eye though.

Six other GGGA students also finished in the top 10 in the Boys 15-18 Division at IMG Eagle Creek while two also finished in the top 5 in the Girls 15-18 Division.

Jose Calanda, also of Mexico, had a fanastic weekend as well as he took third at 4 under while fellow GGGA students Evaristo Rubio (Mexico), Manuel Torres (Venezuela) and Si Thu Ye Yint (Burma) tied for fifth at even par. Rounding out the top 10 were Patrick Gobran (Canada) and Sasha Wortelboer (Switzerland), who tied for eighth at +1.

In the Girls 15-18 Division, Angela Luna, of Colombia, and Ankita Kedlaya, of India, tied for fifth at +4.

The IMG Junior Golf Tour event at Eagle Creek Golf Club was a 36-hole event held Oct. 19-20, 2013 in Orlando, FL.
